htxt.africast – Apple’s M1 gamble

It is another hot, long week here in South Africa and the africast arrives yet again to talk about all the new tech out in the world.

Some of the most popular of that new tech is the next generation of consoles. Hardware from both Microsoft and Sony is out in the wild and we have access to the latter.

We’ll have a proper review of the PlayStation 5 out soon, but if you want something specific tested on it, lest us know on Facebook or Twitter.

Arguably less exciting hardware is that from DStv with its Explora Ultra decoder being in bed with the enemy with built-in support for Netflix.

In the last news roundup item this week, we’re still plugging hours into Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla. Hear our early thoughts as we get closer to finishing this mammoth Ubisoft title.

Our main feature this week is Apple and its decision to ditch Intel to make its own M1 processors for its new lineup of devices.

While early synthetic tests of the M1 have proven promising, the prospect of reinventing the wheel when it comes to processors is a scary one, both for Apple and its consumers. We discuss these problems, as well as roadblocks down the line when this technology tries to come to more powerful desktops.
