macOS Big Sur update reportedly bricking older MacBook Pros

If you own a MacBook Pro, you were probably asked whether you wanted to upgrade to macOS Big Sur this weekend, as we were. One of Apple’s largest updates, the move to OS 11 with Big Sur brings with it many stylistic and design changes. Unfortunately, however, the update has not gone smoothly for all.

So much so that some users have noted that it has essentially bricked their older models of MacBook Pro, with the 13″ late-2013 and 2014 models in particular being cited by MacRumors.

At the time of writing, Apple has not issued an official statement on the issue, or indeed acknowledged it as a reason to release a patch.

As such, no official fix is available, and many are struggling to find one, as resetting the NVRAM and SMC has proved fruitless, according to Engadget.

The site does note, though, that one engineer has found some luck by removing an IC chip for the HDMI port, but it remains to be seen if that is indeed the cause of the issue. If it is, it would present a rather sizeable issue for Apple to fix.

Those users who have been experience problems since making the move to macOS Big Sur have been prompted to book the device for repair by Apple Stateside, so it may be worthwhile holding off on that upgrade if you own a 2013/2014 MacBook Pro.

For now, it does not look like this bricking problem has impacted other devices in the Mac family.
