OANN handed temporary YouTube suspension for showcasing a fake COVID-19 cure

Having pushed the boundaries of truth throughout the US elections and well after them, One America News Network (OANN) has finally pushed too far.

The news network which has been falsely claiming that Donald Trump was re-elected for weeks now was handed a temporary suspension by YouTube. What led YouTube to make this move? OANN claimed there was a cure for COVID-19.

The trouble for OANN is that this claim violates YouTube’s policy regarding COVID-19 misinformation.

“After careful review, we removed a video from OANN and issued a strike on the channel for violating our COVID-19 misinformation policy, which prohibits content claiming there’s a guaranteed cure,” YouTube spokesperson Ivy Choi told The Verge.

As result of this strike, OANN will not be able to upload content or livestream for a week.

The OANN channel has also been removed from the YouTube Partner Program which means that it will no longer earn revenue on adverts which appear on its videos unless it reapplies to join the program.

What should be concerning for OANN is that this action from YouTube counts as a strike, of which creators have three. While creators are issued warnings, Axios reports that OANN has been issued warnings before and moving forward it will only be given strikes for violating policies and not warnings.

But perhaps most damning for OANN is YouTube stating that it does not consider the network an authorative news source. This much should be clear from a brief look at the OANN video feed which is mostly just outlandish clickbait.

While we commend YouTube for finally taking action against OANN we feel it is a bit late given how much misinformation has been able to spread through that YouTube channel during and following the US elections.
