TikTok granted preliminary injunction thanks to influencers

Now here’s something you won’t hear everyday, TikTok has been granted yet another stay of execution in the US thanks to a trio of influencers.

With a series of bans from the US Commerce Department set to kick off on 12th November, TikTok users Douglas Marland, Cosette Rinab and Alec Chambers filed a complaint on 1st October.

The TikTok stars argued that the bans would make TikTok unusable and would cause “irreparable harm” to them.

“According to Platintiffs, each has tried and dailed to establish a following and work as an influencer on competitive platforms. Shuttering TikTok would in face shut down Plaintiffs’ influencing activities. This harm is not merely possible, but certain to occur after November 12,” wrote Judge Wendy Beetlestone in the ruling.

This injunction didn’t come uncontested.

In the filing – which can be viewed over on The Verge – Beetlestone writes that the US government suggested that TikTok remain unbanned for the three influencers as they brought the lawsuit before the court.

Naturally, that’s an impossible task as the judge pointed out as the service would also need to remain unbanned for the influencer’s followers as well.

For now then, TikTok is safe but we are of the opinion that the Trump administration may try a different approach to kick TikTok out of the US.

How long TikTok will remain safe is unclear, especially with a potential change of leadership in the US set to be decided on later this week.
