CD Projekt Red addresses poor console performance, refunds and updates

Despite raking in the cash and already turning a profit, Cyberpunk 2077 is beset by technical and design problems, especially on the previous gen PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles. After releasing the game on 10th December developer and publisher CD Projekt Red has released a statement.

“First of all, we would like to start by apologizing to you for not showing the game on base last-gen consoles before it premiered and, in consequence, not allowing you to make a more informed decision about your purchase. We should have paid more attention to making it play better on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One,” reads the beginning of the statement.

Infamously review codes for Cyberpunk 2077 on console did not go out to reviewers before launch, even for those who specifically asked for them over codes on PC. This, combined with the fact that most of the game’s marketing used the PC, meant that those on original consoles didn’t have a great idea what they were getting into when the 10th December release date rolled around.

Now after a weekend of millions of players getting stuck in, many problems have arisen on this hardware, especially when it comes to performance.

“Second, we will fix bugs and crashes, and improve the overall experience. The first round of updates has just been released and the next one is coming within the next 7 days. Expect more, as we will update frequently whenever new improvements are ready,” the statement continues.

As we head into the holidays and the new year more updates are promised. Patches are promised for both January and February. Together these will, apparently, “fix the most prominent problems gamers are facing on last-gen consoles”.

Before this announcement headlines came out that those on PlayStation 4 had began requesting, and receiving, refunds for purchases of Cyberpunk 2077. While Sony does have refund policies in place the process isn’t as easy as, say, Steam, so a large scale refund is usually newsworthy. While we doubt CD Projekt Red is hurting for cash right now, it has also addressed this.

“Finally, we would always like everyone who buys our games to be satisfied with their purchase. We would appreciate it if you would give us a chance, but if you are not pleased with the game on your console and don’t want to wait for updates, you can opt to refund your copy. For copies purchased digitally, please use the refund system of PSN or Xbox respectively. For boxed versions, please first try to get a refund at the store where you bought the game,” the announcement adds.

If you’d like to refund a boxed version but have no luck with the store you bought it from, CD Projekt Red is also offering to help you. Until 21st December you can email the company at helpmerefund@cdprojektred.com to get the process going.

It’s all a bit of a mess honestly. We’ll have a review of the game out soon and, even on PC, things do not look good. Cyberpunk 2077 desperately needed more months in the oven and less overblown marketing which sold a product that is severely lacking. We’re still having fun with the game but we have to recommend that most people hang onto their money at least right now.
