Uber is selling off its autonomous driving division

Autonomous driving is not something Uber feels it needs to hold near and dear to its chest anymore as the firm announces its autonomous driving division is being acquired.

The Uber Advanced Technologies Group is the division within the ride-sharing firm that handles autonomous driving but this week that division is being acquired by Aurora.

“With the addition of ATG, Aurora will have an incredibly strong team and technology, a clear path to several markets, and the resources to deliver. Simply put, Aurora will be the company best positioned to deliver the self-driving products necessary to make transportation and logistics safer, more accessible, and less expensive,” Aurora co-founder and chief executive officer, Chris Urmson, said in a statement.

Uber isn’t abandoning self driving tech altogether though. The firm will invest $400 million into Aurora and Dara Khosrowshahi will be joining the Aurora board.

Uber parting ways with the Advanced Technologies Group may come as a shock to some but investors are likely breathing a sigh of relief.

This is because the Advanced Technologies Group and “other technologies” reported a net loss of $303 million in a nine month period ending September 2020.

There’s also the matter of Uber’s self driving efforts being dangerous.

Aurora is a firm focused on autonomous driving solutions and the move to sell the Advanced Technologies Group to Aurora is one that makes sense.
