Banned man congratulates Nigeria for banning Twitter

Last week Nigeria banned Twitter after the platform removed a tweet sent by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Following that removal, Buhari and his government banned Twitter in Nigeria and any citizens found using the service can be prosecuted.

Somebody who knows a little bit about being banned is Donald Trump, who has been banned from using YouTube, Twitter and Facebook.

As such the former US president decided to weigh in on the Nigerian ban of Twitter in a “statement”. We use quotation marks because much like his time in office, this statement reads like an incoherent tweet.

“Congratulations to the country of Nigeria, who just banned Twitter because they banned their President. More COUNTRIES should ban Twitter and Facebook for not allowing free and open speech—all voices should be heard,” wrote Trump.

First off, Buhari wasn’t banned from Twitter, he just had a very dangerous tweet removed, but that’s not all Trump doesn’t seem to realise.

It appears as if Trump doesn’t realise that citizens can be arrested and prosecuted simply for sending a tweet in Nigeria. In fact, his statement shows that he has no understanding of what is going on in Nigeria, choosing instead to boast about Facebook chief executive officer coming to the White House for dinner?

“…competitors will emerge and take hold. Who are they to dictate good and evil if they themselves are evil? Perhaps I should have done it while I was President. But Zuckerberg kept calling me and coming to the White House for dinner telling me how great I was,” Trump concluded.

On Monday afternoon, the National Broadcasting Commission in Nigeria ordered “all Broadcasting Stations to suspend patronage of Twitter immediately”.

“Broadcasting Station are hereby advised to de-install twitter handles and desist from using twitter as a source (UGC) of information gathering for News and programmes Presentation, especially Phone-in,” a press release from the NBC reads.

“Note that it will be unpatriotic for any broadcaster in Nigeria to continue to patronise the suspended Twitter as a source of its information there strict compliance is enjoined,” the statement concludes.

While Buhari’s spokesperson said that the ban was temporary via a TechCrunch report, asking broadcasters to “de-install” Twitter handles doesn’t sound temporary to us.

As an aside, as much as Trump hates Twitter, he really does seem to miss the format of the platform given almost every statement – which he labels as 45th President of the United State of America (poor fella seems to have trouble letting go) – reads like his incoherent Twitter feed.
