COVID-19 in South Africa: 17th June 2021

While yesterday’s Youth Day was supposed to bring a welcome mid-week break to what has been a series of stressful weeks for many in the country, it instead sees the number of new cases for COVID-19 in South Africa surge massively.

This as the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) confirmed that 13 246 new infections have been reported, while the National Department of Health (NDoH) has only served up an infographic with no other updates on crucial statistics for its latest report.

The result sees the total number of infections recorded to date rise to 1 774 312, with over 12.33 million tests having been conducted to date. The recovery rate now sits at 91.3 percent, with 1 620 317 recoveries reported and the current number of active cases is 95 772.

Along with the surge in new cases, newly recorded fatalities over the past 24 hours is also high at 136. As a result, the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa has climbed to 58 223.

As for the vaccine rollout, which still remains hampered and slow, the NDoH confirms that 1 965 812 vaccines have been administered as of 23:59 on 15th June. It is also important to point out that 1 486 044 of these vaccines are the first dose of the Pfizer variant, requiring a second dose six weeks after the first.

The number of inoculated people in South Africa is therefore far less than that of the vaccines administered, emphasising the importance of ramping up the rollout in coming weeks and months.
