In what has proved to be another testing week with COVID-19 in South Africa, we enter a new weekend at alert level 3 lockdown and a third wave of infections. Regarding the latter, the latest report from the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) confirms that 11 767 new cases for the virus have been recorded over the past 24 hours.
We have this week shifted to using the the NICD as a reference for the latest COVID-19 statistics as the National Department of Health’s (NDoH) SA Coronavirus website has only been sharing the daily infographic and not much else. If you’re wanting more detail, you now have to search for it from other sources instead of using one single platform.
As for the other key statistics regarding COVID-19 in South Africa, the total number of infections recorded to date now sits at 1 786 079, with over 12.38 million tests having been conducted so far. Given the increase in new daily infections, the recovery rate has dropped to 90.39 percent, with 1 623 319 recoveries reported.
Looking at the latest vaccine figures, which are only accurate as of 23:59 on 16th June, according to the NDoH, 1 974 099 vaccines have been administered to date. Crucially 1 494 331 of these are the first dose of Pfizer vaccine, so the precise nature of the country’s level of inoculation is difficult to pin down at this stage.
Unfortunately 100 new fatalities have also been recorded over the past 24 hours, with the death toll rising to 58 323.
