LEGO provides as we wait for more Mandalorian

It is still going to be a very long wait before The Mandalorian is back on Disney+ with season three scheduled for release on Christmas Day 2021. To keep us occupied until then LEGO has announced three more sets based on the show will be released in August.

Before we look at the three sets, their piece counts and prices, it’s the name of one of them that warrants some discussion. Set 75312: Boba Fett’s Starship is exactly what it sounds like, but hold on, what happened to the “Slave I”.

According to the Design Director for LEGO Star Wars, Disney has asked that the name “Slave I” be dropped. It’s seems that it’s not just LEGO that will be avoiding the name but Disney and all their partners going forward.

LEGO’s set seems to be the first to do this, so we will need to see more toys based on the Starship to be released to find out if this is a pattern.

Naming aside the set itself is really nice. It has 592 pieces and will cost $49.99 / £44.99 / €49.99 depending on your region. As we look at prices here South Africans usually pay the UK one after conversion and a bit extra on top of that.

The set comes with two minifigures in the forms of Boba Fett and The Mandalorian himself, Din Djarin.

Funnily enough LEGO made a version of this ship rather recently. In 2019 the 75243: Slave I – 20th Anniversary Edition set was released with 1 007 pieces. it obviously cost more but was more detailed and came with five minifigures instead.

This new version (see the gallery below) aside from the changed name, is more affordable and based on The Mandalorian appearance instead of the original incarnation of the ship.

The other two sets revealed by LEGO at the first ever LEGOCON are 75311: Imperial Armoured Marauder and 75315: Imperial Light Cruiser.

The Light Cruiser is the more interesting of the two to us. It has 1 336 pieces, costs $159.99 / £149.99 / €159.99 and comes with six minifigures.

Cara Dune, Dark Trooper, Din Djarin, Fennec Shand, Grogu and Moff Gideon are those six.

This is also worth a mention because, when it was announced that Cara Dune would not return in The Mandalorian, there was a scramble to buy all the toys based on her assuming no more would be made and the prices on second hand markets would go up.

Lastly there’s the Armoured Marauder.

478 pieces, $39.99 /£34.99 / €39.99 and four minifigures. There’s an Artillery Stormtrooper, two Stormtroopers and the only named character in the set, Greef Karga.

This one is arguably the most boring both in terms of design and meta discussion.
