Lenovo’s new ThinkPad hardware to land in SA in July and August

This week Lenovo revealed some of its new ThinkPad notebooks running the latest processor offerings from Intel and featuring a few updates across the board. Last month we saw Lenovo debut a quartet of new Legion gaming notebooks sporting the latest silicon from Intel and now the workstations are getting the same treatment.

Lenovo South Africa have also provided us with launch windows and recommended pricing for the new hardware.

But we share those details, let’s take a look at the refreshed ThinkPad lineup, starting with the fourth generation of P1. This particular model is designed with those in a creative industry in mind, according to Lenovo. “Content creators, architects, product designers and data scientists alike can bring their creative vision to life across multiple use cases, even while on the go thanks to the high performance of the ThinkPad P1,” explains a press release sent to Hypertext.

To that end this device sports a 16″ UHD display housed within a 15″ body, along with some features that have taken working from home into account, which is something that a number of manufacturers have done of late for their latest PCs and notebooks.

The WFH-focused features include a higher resolution FullHD front facing webcam for videoconferencing, Dolby Atmos supporting speaker system and larger touchpad. Added to this is a larger 90WHr battery too, with support for 5G added to the mix as well.

In terms of graphics cards a choice of Nvidia RTX A5000 or Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 is available, but it remains to be seen what will be offered from a local specification perspective.

Moving onto the other two pieces of Lenovo hardware, the P15 and P17, both of which are now in their second generation, and the company has fitted them with 15.6″ and 17.3″ UHD OLED displays respectively. These new devices also see Lenovo deepen its relationship with Nvidia, as they are both Nvidia Studio validated, should that prove a key element in your purchasing decision.

“Lenovo’s ThinkPad P Series mobile workstations are powered by NVIDIA RTX GPUs and deliver powerful graphics and real-time rendering that let people collaborate and work from anywhere they need to,” adds Bob Pette, VP of Professional Visualisation at Nvidia regarding the new hardware.

The Lenovo ThinkPad P15 (2nd Gen) linked to a pair of daisy chained monitors.

As for when you’ll be able to purchase these new workstation notebooks and for how much, Lenovo South Africa says the ThinkPad P1 should land in the country at the end of July, with the price starting at R34 999. The ThinkPad P15 and P17 are both expected in SA come mid-August and will carry a recommended price tag starting from R29 999 and R32 999 respectively.
