Qualcomm’s new flagship mobile chip is the Snapdragon 888 Plus 5G

If you were not aware, Mobile World Congress 2021 is currently underway virtually and while there isn’t the usual fanfare that surrounds the Barcelona-based event this time around, a few tech firms have been making important announcements. One such firm is Qualcomm, which has announced a mid-year refresh for its flagship mobile chipset – the Snapdragon 888 Plus 5G.

This new offering packs a few improvements, such as a better clock speed of 2.995Ghz compared to the original’s 2.84Ghz. The combination of Kryo 680 CPU and sixth generation AI Engine  also yields a 20 percent improvement across the board, the silicon maker explains.

It looks like these improvements are specifically aimed at the mobile gaming crowd.

“The platform is armed with the full arsenal of Snapdragon Elite Gaming features to harness the power of ultra-smooth responsiveness, color-rich HDR graphics, and mobile-first desktop-level,” notes the Qualcomm blog post regarding the announcement.

“Snapdragon is synonymous with premium Android experiences. Our latest flagship Snapdragon 888 Plus 5G Mobile Platform will help deliver the premium entertainment, connectivity, and gaming experiences users deserve. We’re excited to see OEMs launch with products based on our highest performing platform,” adds said Christopher Patrick, SVP and GM for mobile handset business at Qualcomm.

As for which OEMs will be utilising the new silicon in upcoming devices, the company has highlighted the likes of Asus, Honor, Motorola, Vivo and Xiaomi. With a handful of those companies operating in South Africa, perhaps we could see a gaming focused smartphone land locally in the latter half of this year.

“We are looking forward to further strengthening Xiaomi’s position in the high-end segment by leveraging the strong 5G, AI, gaming, and camera features of Snapdragon 888 Plus to meet the expectations of Mi Fans across the world,” said Lei Zhang, VP of Mi Smartphone and GM of hardware engineering at Xiaomi.
