‘Semi-new game reveal’ planned for SA dev Free Lives

South African developer Free Lives – known for games like Broforce and Gorn – is set to reveal a newish title that everyone will be able to play soon.

This announcement comes from publisher Devolver Digital which has been a Free Lives partner for many of the developer’s games.

The publisher has made this announcement, complete with a screenshot, in the tweet below.

For those confused by the “semi-new” wording in the announcement above it’s likely because the game in question is Terra Nil, a “reverse city builder” that Free lives showed off last year.

Terra Nil is a hobby project that some Free Lives developers were working on in a private capacity before it was decided to be turned into a commercial project.

You can see our story on the announcement here which includes some short gifs of the game. Hell, right now you can even play the game as it’s available on itch.io.

“Turn a barren wasteland into an ecological paradise complete with different flora and fauna, then clean up after yourself to leave the environment pristine. This strategy game/city builder/puzzler subverts the conventional goal of the city builder genre. Terra Nil is about the restoration of a ravaged environment, where the lightest touch is best,” reads the description of the game on itch.io.

What’s interesting is that the art style of Terra Nil is very different to the screenshot shared by Devolver Digital. Look at the embedded gif below and compare to that screenshot and they could be different games entirely.

Or it could simply be the fact that the art style of the game has changed in development.

Because of time zones the reveal should be happening later today, so we won’t have to wait long to find out.
