Sonic & friends make their blocky debut in Minecraft

This year is the 30th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog with several exciting events happening in the series including a crossover with Minecraft.

Sonic and friends have now been officially added into Minecraft as DLC and the translation of these character’s into the game’s art style is interesting to say the least.

We’re not sure how it could have been done better but something’s not right about how this looks. If you told us these designs were bootlegs made by fans we’d believe you, though we’re not sure this is any more off-putting than the equally blocky LEGO versions of the characters from the now dead Dimensions platform.

In motion (see the trailer below) things actually look really promising and there’s a nice sense of speed which is always vitally important for Sonic.

We’re not sure if it’s the nature of the character design here but Sonic has a bad case of the Naruto run as he zips around Minecraft. This look is made even funnier by the fact that only his feet seem to be animated in the run cycle making the effect more pronounced.

Feature or flaw, you decide.

If you’re left unimpressed by what’s on offer here more is apparently on the way this week.

“You can also celebrate Sonic’s birthday by joining the special server event! Starting soon, The Hive are hosting a two-week server-hub takeover featuring mini-games and a few festive surprises. I heard a rumor that something special is happening on one of the weekends, so make sure to check in regularly! Keep an eye on @minecraft on Twitter for details!” an announcement reads.

Right now the official Minecraft Twitter account has not tweeted out anything about Sonic except a general announcement of the DLC. It’s not the weekend at the time of writing so we have to imagine the celebrations will start in a few days.
