It looks like Automattic is widening its breadth of online writing platforms, with the company adding private journaling app Day One to the likes of WordPress and Tumblr (RIP).

The terms of the acquisition have not been fully disclosed, but as TechCrunch notes, Day One has been self-funded for 10 years an in that time has amassed 15 million users across the Apple devices ecosystem.

Whether a port to other platforms like Windows and Android is now in the offing following the acquisition remains to be seen but, regardless, it now means that Automattic has a greater number of platforms where users can create and publish written content online.

“We’re excited to welcome Day One to the Automattic team. Day One is a private journaling app that makes writing for yourself a simple pleasure. A beautifully designed user experience has earned the app prestigious awards including App Store Editor’s Choice, App of the Year, and the Apple Design Award, along with high praise from The New York Times, The Washington Post, Time, Wired, and more,” wrote heads of Apps at Automattic, Eli Budelli in a WordPress blog post.

“While WordPress.com and Tumblr have you covered for sharing your thoughts with the world, journaling with Day One is just for you. In fact, privacy is at the heart of Day One, thanks to the full end-to-end encryption applied to every entry, in every journal,” Budelli adds.

As for the fate of Day One and its team, it appears as if things will remain much the same now that the acquisition has been finalised.

“When a small software company is acquired by a larger company, the original team is often swallowed up by the larger company. That’s not the case here. I’ll be remaining at the helm of Day One, leading the same passionate team that has been responsible for the development and design behind the app today.” explained CEO Paul Mayne in his own blog post.

“This means that the Day One you rely on to save your thoughts, photos, videos, audio recordings, and more isn’t going away. Instead, it’ll only get better, with future integrations with Tumblr and WordPress.com. Rest assured there are no current plans to change the privacy of Day One; safely protecting memories and creating a 100% personal space is the foundation upon which this company was built,” Mayne adds.

It likely means that Day One now has a larger pool of resources to tap into, and potentially look to grow its existing base of 15 million users.
