CNN is launching a streaming service in 2022 with movies and original shows

Every company needs a streaming platform, or at least that’s the message we’ve been reading of late with seemingly every major studio, US broadcaster and their mums starting a streaming service.

Case in point is the newly announced CNN+ which is, a streaming service for CNN. The service will launch in 2022, and according to Engadget, it will offer a blend of live and on-demand programming that is “separate and distinct” from the coverage on TV.

CNN will reportedly draw from its catalogue of existing content such as Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, but it will also be creating original shows and movies for the service.

However, CNN won’t be able to include its current live programming “due to lucrative and long-term deals with cable distributors”. With that having been said, those with a TV subscription for CNN will be able to access programming via CNN+.

This all sounds fairly run of the mill but then there’s this interview from Variety featuring CNN Worldwide chief digital officer Andrew Morse.

In that interview Morse said that CNN+ would not be bundled with HBO Max despite both brands being owned, or soon to be owned, by WarnerMedia.

Look, we get it, CNN and HBO are different companies with different goals and targets and unifying their platforms might lead to some unseen consequences for both. As a consumer however, the idea of having to fork out money for yet another subscription is just too much to handle.

Streaming fatigue is something we’ve spoken about too many times already so instead we’ll point you to this Africast recorded earlier this year where we wax lyrically about the pains of watching Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

CNN+ will launch in the US first with launches in other countries coming down the line but we have to wonder how attractive it will be for those outside of the US.

As for the price, there is no word yet on how much CNN+ will cost.

While platforms like Showmax have bundled live news with on-demand streaming, CNN going at it alone could be sign to come that more news agencies will do the same.

All of this has us wondering about when some plucky Silicon Valley firm will come up with a way to unify all of these streaming services into one product. Then perhaps they could sell consumers a box they can use to access streams from the living room and keep a stream of content going endlessly just in case folks want to watch something but don’t know what to watch.

We could use some fancy Latin words to describe this product, perhaps merging tele (far) and visio (sight) to, wait. It seems we have just described television broadcasting.
