COVID-19 in South Africa: 16th July 2021

This past week has been less than ideal when it comes to fighting COVID-19 in South Africa. As some communities try to rebuild their destroyed property and others look to protect infrastructure from further damage caused by rioters, the figures for the spread of the virus show no signs of lessening at this stage.

According to the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH), 16 435 new cases have been recorded over the past 24 hours. This sees the total number of infections recorded to date increase to 2 253 240. Added to this is a recovery rate of 88 percent, while more than 14.1 million tests have been conducted so far.

Perhaps the most concerning figure at this stage is the number of newly recorded fatalities. They peaked at over 600 earlier in the week and in the past 24 hours 377 have been reported, demonstrating just how dangerous the delta variant of the virus has been up until now. Consequently the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa has risen to 65 972.

It therefore places even greater importance on the ramping up of our vaccine rollout, with those aged 35 to 49 now capable of registering to receive jabs. As of 17:00 on 15th July 2021, the NDoH says 4 869 759 vaccines have been administered to date, with 172 466 over the past 24 hours. The latter figure needs to increase significantly over the coming weeks if any type of population immunity is to be reached.
