This week the country looks to rebuild and restore the damage caused by the previous week’s chaos, unrest and riots. It still remains to be seen what the full toll of the destruction is, but as the rebuilding process begins, we still have COVID-19 in South Africa to consider.
To that end, the first week of the extended level 4 lockdown is complete, but it remains to be seen how effectively the country has been able to curb the spread of the virus during this third wave.
Looking at the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH), numbers across the board are lower, but there are a handful of contributing factors as to why that is the case. As such, the daily reports later in the week should give a better indication of the spread of the virus.
For now, 11 215 new cases have been recorded over the past 24 hours, pushing the total number of infections reported to date to 2 295 095. The recovery rate has picked up slightly to 89.3 percent as a result, with over 14.2 million tests also having been conducted to date.
As for the vaccine rollout, as of 17:00 on 18th July 5 095 013 vaccines have been administered to date. With the 35 to 49 year old age bracket now capable of registering, hopefully the rollout will finally begin to pick up some much needed pace.
Unfortunately, however, 183 new fatalities have been reported over the past 24 hours too. The death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa has climbed to 66 859 as a result.
