COVID-19 in South Africa: 22nd July 2021

As the cold weather persists and the country starts to rebuild after the destruction of last week, it looks as if we are far from bringing the third wave of infections for COVID-19 in South Africa under control. This as the past 24 hours has seen 16 240 new cases being recorded, which is a significant amount than we saw the previous day.

Added to this is the continued high fatality rate during the month of July, with 516 deaths recorded over the past 24 hours. Consequently, the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa has risen to 68 912.

As for the total number of infections reported to date, they now sit at 2 327 472, as the recovery rate is currently 90.2 percent.

The extended adjusted level 4 lockdown is earmarked to end on 25th July, but given that no improvements have been made as far as our COVID-19 stats are concerned, it is looking increasingly unlikely that a lower level of lockdown will be announced by the President. As such, it will be interesting to hear what decision the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) makes when the country tunes in for another family meeting on this coming Sunday evening.

In the interim, looking at the rest of the statistics from the National Department of Health’s (NDoH) latest report, over 14.36 million tests have been conducted to date, with 5 831 389 vaccines administered to date. The vaccine rollout also appears to be gathering pace, with 257 492 jabs given out over the past 24 hours according to the NDoH.
