Darktide delayed into the grimdark future of 2022

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide – originally planned for a release some time in 2021 – has been delayed into Spring 2022.

Developer and publisher Fatshark is best known as the company behind the successful Vermintide franchise that brought a really solid co-op shooter and melee first person experiance to the world of Warhammer. By all account Darktide looks to be doing the same for the 40K portion of Games Workshop’s universe.

While Fatshark is a Swedish company we have to assume that the Spring mentioned above is the US Spring, which would place the new release for the game between late March and late June.

“We have a responsibility to deliver the best game we possibly can, and frankly we need more time to accomplish this goal. It’s no secret that building a game during a pandemic is a challenge and we are not immune to this. We are planning to use the extra time to both focus on the level of quality at release, as well as invest in more systems to support Darktide for years to come,” writes Martin Wahlund, the CEO and co-founder of Fatshark.

As for what players are expecting for Darktide it, much like Vermintide, will focus on four player co-op. The setting of the game is a hive city called Tertium which is interesting because another Warhammer 40K FPS released recently – Necromunda: Hired Gun – was also set in a hive city.

Games set in the Warhammer and Warhammer 40K universe are very hit and miss with the aforementioned Necromunda being squarely in the “miss” category. The Vermindtide games veered much more into “hit” territory so we were excited to give this one a go, especially as Hired Gun got us hungry to play a decent 40K FPS.

“We couldn’t be more excited about Darktide. In fact, the toughest part in this decision is the fact that we won’t be able to put the game in your hands sooner. But I hope that you will join us in Hive Tertium early next year!” Wahlund adds.

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide is planned for release on PC and Xbox Series X|S.
