Here’s what you need to know about Information Regulator member nominations

With the Protection of Personal Information Act put into full effect as of 1st July, the Information Regulator has now issued a call for nominations for members to join its ranks.

The Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services has issued an invite for individuals, institutions and civil society to nominate four persons who are suitable for a position as an Information Regulator member for a period of five years.

While anybody can be selected to form part of the Information Regulator, at least one person must be a practising advocate, attorney or professor of law at a university.

With that having been said, the other three members must be appointed based on qualifications, expertise and experience relating to the objectives of the Information Regulator.

To get an idea of what the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services is looking for, the current members of the Information Regulator are advocates and attorneys with incredibly diverse expertise so it seems a legal degree is likely to stand you in better stead though we would encourage nominations of those in cybersecurity, data analytics and data science as well.

Nominations close on 30th August and you can submit nominations to vramaano[at]parliament[dot]gov[dot]za.

Your nomination should include:

  • The full name, address, email address and contact details of the person or organisation making the nomination
  • A signed acceptance of the nomination by the nominee
  • The nominee’s Curriculum Vitae.

On the point of the nominee’s CV, it should contain:

  • Full name, ID number and gender;
  • Contact details including physical address, telephone / cell number and email address;
  • Relevant previous experience (including relevant dates and organisations concerned);
  • Academic qualifications.

The Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services has not said when the new members will be announced, but we’ll be sure to share that announcement when it is made.
