Nickelodeon the latest to make a Super Smash Bros. clone

The latest company to take a swing at making a Super Smash Bros. game is Nickelodeon as the company has announced, through IGN, the game All-Star Brawl.

Like other games aping on the successful Nintendo franchise, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl brings together characters from multiple franchises to duke it out.

You can see many of the revealed playable characters in the trailer at the bottom of this page, but a provided list of them so far is as follows:

• Danny Phantom (Danny Phantom)
• Helga (Hey Arnold!)
• Leonardo (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)
• Lincoln Loud (The Loud House)
• Lucy Loud (The Loud House)
• Michelangelo (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)
• Nigel Thornberry (The Wild Thornberrys)
• Oblina (Aaahh!!! Real Monsters)
• Patrick Star (SpongeBob SquarePants)
• Powdered Toast Man (Ren & Stimpy)
• Reptar (Rugrats)
• Sandy Cheeks (SpongeBob SquarePants)
• SpongeBob SquarePants (SpongeBob SquarePants)
• Zim (Invader Zim)

There’s a surprising mix here of older and newer Nickelodeon characters and franchises. There are some obvious inclusions with a trio of characters from SpongeBob SquarePants and newer favourites such as those from The Loud House, but we’re surprised to see some dark horse inclusions from Aaahh!!! Real Monsters and Rugrats.

This all reminds us of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, Sony’s attempt at a similar Super Smash Bros. clone from back in 2012.

The most popular attempt at this, outside of Nintendo, is likely Brawlhalla which leaned on crossovers to fill out its roster instead of relying on an existing cast. Shovel Knight, Ben 10, Adventure Time, Hellboy and more have all appeared in the game. Funnily enough the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were the most recent crossover in Brawlhalla.

Back to Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl and it’s scheduled for released in the US Fall 2021. For those of us outside of America that should be between early September and late November.

Developers Ludosity and Fair Play Labs are behind this one with publisher GameMill Entertainment releasing the title on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.

It’s a bit surprising that PC is being left out here as there’s always been a hole in the market for platform fighters there. Mobile is also a noticeable miss here as Brawlhalla has found success there.

Store listings on American retailer Target also share some extra information, such as the inclusion of four-player local play across 20 levels.

“20 themed levels like Jellyfish Field from the Spongebob Squarepants series, Technodrome from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, plus many more!” the store page reads.

These Target listings also show off what looks to be a placeholder for the boxed copies, which you can see in the header image above for the PlayStation 4 and 5 versions.

The Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl meta is young right now but we’re for sure maining Reptar.
