Official guide provided for GPU problems in New World

It has been a rough few days, both for upcoming MMO New World and PC manufacturer EVGA, as reports are coming out that graphics cards from the latter (especially the RTX 3090 TI) are being put out of commission when playing the former.

On the official New World forum a customer service representative has issued guidance for players who may be worried about a similar issue or are experiencing 100 percent GPU load.

The customer service rep “Ironsmith_Albert” has posted a thread entitled “Known Issue: NVIDIA RTX 3090 Series & 100% GPU Usage” into the game support portion of the forum, which reads:

“Hi Adventurers,

Thank you all for sharing your reports about this problem, we believe this is related with driver settings and frame rate limiters.

1. Disable the overrides in the driver settings,
2. Make sure to press “APPLY”
3. Restart the game client.

Also you can cap your FPS.

This will help prevent issues with the GPU’s utilization.

Go to Settings > Visuals > Max fps > Set this to 60, this should help to bring the utilization back down.

Additionally, please be sure to check in your NVIDIA Control Panel under Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings > Select New World, and check that Max Frame Rate either shows ‘Use Global Settings (Off) or just Off.

Please let us know if you need more assistance and thank you all for your contributions to the Beta.”

The replies to this guidance don’t seem to be happy with many refuting the claim that the problems experienced so far have to do with driver settings as stated at the top of the post.

Also in the replies is players on different graphics cards also experiencing problems such as high fan speeds, settings issues, crashes, high system usage when in menus and more.

As mentioned at the start of this story New World is currently in beta and is planned to have a 1.0 release on 31st August 2021. As such technical problems are to be expected but it seems so far that the ones in this game are not acceptable, especially if the game is proven to be the cause of hardware failure.

Right now EVGA hasn’t issued a statement about these problems, but Amazon Games, the developer and publisher of New World, has issued one to Kotaku. The full statement can be read in Kotaku’s story, but Amazon Games seems sure that it’s not at fault and there’s “no indication of widespread issues with 3090s”.

This is obviously a developing situation and we’ll need to do some waiting to find out what’s the full truth here.
