Samsung teases S-pen support for Z-series ahead of Unpacked

The fact that Samsung announced there would be no Galaxy Note series released in 2021 should be a clear indication that we’ll be seeing more of Samsung’s folding smartphones at Unpacked next month.

That’s not good enough you say? Well then how about a blog penned by president and head of mobile communications at Samsung Electronics, TM Roh.

The blog post is headlined – “The Next Era of Smartphone Innovation is About to Unfold” – and much of it is spent reflecting on how technology continues to “reshape the way we live”.

There is even a line in there about how Samsung is “poised and ready to unveil visionary, purposeful mobile technology for a better world”. Exactly how a R40 000 smartphone makes the world better is unclear.

However, corporate fluff aside, Roh did confirm that we’d be seeing new devices from the Galaxy Z series.

“As we explore new ways to empower you, we often venture into uncharted territory. That’s how we ended up creating a brand-new category with the launch of the Galaxy Fold. And we didn’t stop there. We kept improving the category with our second generation of foldables, the Galaxy Z Fold2 and the Galaxy Z Flip, with more screens and more of the features you now know and love. I’m excited to say our third generation of foldable devices will open up amazing new multitasking capabilities and enhanced durability for even more people around the world,” writes Roh.

The note about durability is rather important given that the first generation of folding smartphones from Samsung (and other manufacturers to be fair) weren’t exactly built with real-world use in mind. Dirt was able to find its way under the display and a part of the display, thought by many to be a screen protector, was peeled off by users because many didn’t know any better.

Something that is very interesting is Roh’s reveal that the Galaxy Z series will be getting an S-pen designed specifically for the series.

“Instead of unveiling a new Galaxy Note this time around, we will further broaden beloved Note features to more Samsung Galaxy devices,” Roh added.

This has us curious not only about the Z-series but Samsung’s S-series which is more than likely going to be revealed as we flip the calendar to 2022. Could we see an S-pen included with that handset?

We have our doubts, especially when it comes to the entry level of the S-series but who knows, with the Note dead for this year, perhaps Samsung adds yet another S-series to the mix that features an S-pen in the body.

Samsung will also likely use this Unpacked to showcase wearables which will run on Google Wear which was announced earlier this year.

It’s looking to be a packed Unpacked.
