With Horizon 5 on the way Forza Motorsport 7 is being delisted

On 5th November 2021  Forza Horizon 5 will become the newest entry in the franchise but the more sim-focused racer from 2017 – Forza Motorsport 7 – will be dead and gone before then.

The older game is reaching what is known as “End of Life Status” where the game is removed from stores and made inaccessible with new players unable to buy and experience the game.

As we mentioned with the impending death of the Dr. Mario World game this is horrible for game preservation.

While not stated in the announcement the reason for this end of life concept to exist is contracts. Forza Motorsport 7, like most racing games, is built using limited-time licences for the use of its cars (and likely music too) eventually these contracts run out and it’s not economically viable to be renewed, so simply removing them from stores is preferred.

This has happened with several Forza games in the past. Before Motorsport 7, Horizon 3 was removed from stores in a similar way back in September 2020.

Forza Motorsport 7 will be removed from stores come 15th September 2021. Existing owners of the game will still be able to play it and the online servers will even remain operational.

“For any Xbox Game Pass players who previously purchased DLC for the game, but not the game itself, we have good news! You will receive a token for the game through the Xbox Message Center so that you can continue playing Forza Motorsport 7. Token distribution will be through August 2. However, if after that date you have not received your token, please contact Xbox Support here. (Unused tokens will expire on September 15, 2023),” the announcement reads.

Those who prefer to own the game before its delisting can do so at a discount with the Microsoft Store selling it for 75 percent off until it is removed.

This sale and the ability for owners to continue playing are much better approaches at the necessity to kill games, unlike the aforementioned Mario titles that will become inaccessible in any official capacity once its servers are shuttered.
