As has been the case in past weeks, the daily figures related to COVID-19 in South Africa have risen as we approach the weekend.
According to the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH), the number of new infections is increasing, while fatalities remain at a concerning level.
To that end, the report confirms 13 263 new cases have been reported over the past 24 hours, pushing the total number of infections recorded to date to 2 484 009. As for fatalities, 423 have been reported and while this is less than yesterday’s number of 555, the figure remains a concern given how high it is. It therefore looks like the delta variant of the virus will prove to the the most deadly for SA so far.
The death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa has since climbed to 73 415.
Looking at the other statistics in the report, over 15.03 million tests have been conducted to date, while the recovery rate now sits at 90.9 percent given the rise in new cases. The number of recoveries reported to date are now 2 258 603.
As for the vaccine rollout, the pace remains slower compared to previous weeks, with 185 949 vaccines being administered in the past 24 hours. As of 17:00 on 4th August, the cumulative number of jabs administered is now 8 182 380. The number of inoculated South Africans is estimated at 3 327 950.
