Cult of the Lamb is Happy Tree Friends plus cultism

Publisher Devolver Digital and developer Massive Monster have answered a question no one has ever asked: what if the violent cartoon Happy Tree Friends kept its disturbing aspects and started incorporating cultism? Well the answer is the game Cult of the Lamb.

Revealed at Gamescom, Cult of the Lamb caught our attention (and the attention of most) not only with its bonkers concept, but also its unique art style.

Aside from bashing cutesy anthropomorphic animals with disturbing content, it also has a unique look that you need to watch a trailer for – embedded below – to understand.

The best way to explain it is a popup book aesthetic that, while still 2D, manages to look convincingly real. The reveal trailer also has some great custom animation mixed with gameplay.

The Steam page for the game gives us a bit more information about what we can expect here.

“Cult of the Lamb casts players in the role of a possessed lamb saved from annihilation by an ominous stranger, and must repay their debt by building a loyal following in his name. Start your own cult in a land of false prophets, venturing out into diverse and mysterious regions to build a loyal community of woodland worshippers and spread your Word to become the one true cult,” the store description reads.

Looking at the categorisation tags for Cult of the Lamb and three are present: action roguelike, dungeon crawler, and roguelite.

Players can defeat other cult leaders to absorb their powers as well as progress their own cult by doing so. The Steam page makes mention of five regions available for play.

Cult of the Lamb is planned for release some time in 2022. No exact period has been provided, now has the details on available. PC and console will both get to play but no mention of which specific consoles just yet.
