Eskom says it’s not hiring but is advertising 75 positions online? What’s going on?

This morning there have been reports that Eskom is on something of a recruitment drive but the utility has come out and said these reports aren’t accurate.

Indeed, Eskom is advertising vacancies on its website – as many as 75 in fact – and that is sure to cause a bit of confusion.

The utility appears to have realised this and issued a statement as regards hiring.

“Contrary to media reports this morning, Eskom wishes to reiterate that it is not hiring any new staff. There is no recruitment drive. Instead Eskom is on an active drive to reduce overhead costs through natural attrition and voluntary separation packages offered to managerial staff,” the utility wrote.

So what are the 75 positions being advertised online?

A quick look at the positions reveals that Eskom hope to fill many of the vacancies by promoting folks within the organisation which makes sense in the light of the “natural attrition and voluntary separation packages offered to managerial staff”.

This was further reiterated by Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha in a statement made to MyBroadband.

“These vacancies are mostly marked Internal and are being advertised to the rest of the organisation to give every current Eskom employee a fair chance to apply,” Mantshantsha said.

While there are a few positions where Eskom might look beyond its walls to fill a vacancy, most are marked Internal and it’s probably best not to apply unless of course you are already employed by Eskom.

“Due to Eskom’s commitment to responsible fiscal and human capital management, only critical skills currently not available from the current workforce will be recruited from outside. And this will follow an exhaustive internal search process and the highest levels of governance approvals,” said Eskom Group executive for human resources, Elsie Pule.

Eskom reduced its number of employees by 4.5 percent between March 2020 and March 2021 from 44 772 to 42 749.

It’s important to highlight these sorts of things because scammers have a habit of using government entities to lure unsuspecting citizens into giving them money, personal information and more.
