Getting a vaccine? Uber will give you R100 off on rides to vaccination sites

Last week vaccine registrations opened up for those between the ages of 18 – 34 and if you’re having trouble getting to a vaccine site, then Uber is on hand to help.

As of 25th August (that was Wednesday this week) until 31st October 2021, Uber together with the Department of Health and Mastercard, will give riders two free Uber trips up to the value of R100 for rides to and from vaccination sites.

“We applaud the Department of Health’s efforts to vaccinate the community and we would like to do our part, along with our partners, to support these efforts. Since the onset of the pandemic, we’ve been looking at how we can support our communities and prioritise their health and safety,” said Uber’s general manager for Sub-Saharan Africa, Frans Hiemstra.

In order to qualify for the free ride a trip must start or end at select vaccination centres. You can find a list of these centres here and they include both government operations, as well as private entities like Clicks.

Uber outlined how to claim your free ride below:

  1. If you are new to Uber, create an Uber account. You can download the app, go to the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Click on the voucher link here and click “Add Voucher” to add it to your account
  3. The voucher will appear in the ‘Wallet’ section of the app
  4. The voucher will be applied when requesting a trip to the vaccination centre
  5. Navigate to the rides home screen and enter the pick-up/drop-off location for yourself or the person you are booking for.
  6. Confirm your trip.

Be sure to wear a mask during the trip and insure you have your ID, Passport, Asylum number or Refugee number with you so that you can get your vaccine.

Before you do all that though, head to the South African COVID-19 Vaccination Programme registration portal here.
