Iconic Lamborghini Countach reborn as V12 hybrid with the LPI 800-4

If you grew up in the 80s and were into supercars, you likely had a framed poster of the Lamborghini Countach somewhere in your bedroom. For many it is still the gold standard in terms of supercar design, which often embraced insane lines and superficial livery in favour of practicality.

Now Lamborghini has debuted a new model of Countach – the LPI 800-4 – in order to mark the 50th anniversary of the original vehicle, while also showcasing some of the hybrid engine technology the carmaker has in mind for vehicles of this ilk.

Unveiled at Monterey Car Week, which kicked off over the weekend, the new Countach PLI 800-4 features a V12 hybrid engine that develops a combined 598kW of power. Coupled with an all-wheel drive system, that is no doubt influenced by Audi (which part-owns Lamborghini), this new age Countach can muster 0-100km/h in 2.8 seconds, 0-200km/h in 8.6 seconds and tops out at 355km/h.

While the engine is something new for the Countach brand, the speed it delivers is very familiar.

“The Countach LPI 800-4 pays homage to this Lamborghini legacy but it is not retrospective: it imagines how the iconic Countach of the 70s and 80s might have evolved into an elite super sports model of this decade. It upholds the Lamborghini tradition of looking forward, of exploring new design and technology avenues while celebrating the DNA of our brand. It is a Lamborghini that innately expresses the marque’s enduring and emotive power: always inspirational and thrilling to see, hear and most of all drive,” noted Automobili Lamborghini president and CEO Stephan Winkelmann at the unveiling.

If you are wondering how much one of these will cost, no word on that front has been shared officially from Lamborghini.

That said, there are 112 production models being readied by the company, with sales to customers across the globe set to kick off in the first quarter of 2022. Given the limited number at this stage, you may want to talk to your local dealer to secure one for yourself.
