Preload opens to play Far Cry 5 for free

If you didn’t have any games lined up to play this weekend one just popped up for free in the form of Far Cry 5.

Like many other titles in the past Far Cry 5 will have a free weekend where players can experience the entirety of the paid product with the only restriction being time – as soon as the free weekend ends so does access to the game.

This free weekend is between 5th August and 9th August, but preloading of the game is open right now from here.

PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC (Epic Games Store and Ubisoft Connect) as well as Google Stadia all get access.

One last caveat of the free weekend is that any progress made in the game will be carried over to the paid version should players decide to make a purchase after the fact.

“Welcome to Hope County, Montana, land of the free and the brave but also home to a fanatical doomsday cult known as Eden’s Gate. Stand up to cult leader Joseph Seed, and his siblings, the Heralds, to spark the fires of resistance and liberate the besieged community,” reads the description of the game.

Like every other game in this series it’s a first person shooter where you’re dropped into a hostile environment and need to help the locals overthrow some oppressors.

For our opinion on the game you can check out our launch review from back in 2018.

We recently replayed the title and, while it still holds up in terms of gameplay and graphics, it’s too samey for us. It seems the Far Cry series has been endlessly recycling the formula that was established back in 2012 with Far Cry 3.

We gave up on Far Cry 5 after only a handful of hours and a couple of play sessions because of this.

That’s the great thing about the free weekend, however, because you don’t need to take our word for it. Play it for yourself and come to your own conclusion.

We’ve long talked about our love for demos and this goes a step further by simply giving you free access to the whole game in exchange for a shorter access time, so go nuts.

This endeavour is almost certainly a marketing tool for the upcoming Far Cry 6 planned for released in October this year. Unfortunately it seems like the latest edition is still doing the same things, so we’re not entirely sold on it.
