SASSA – If your details are incorrect you’ll forfeit grants after 31st August

Ever since government announced R350 special COVID-19 social relief of distress grants in April last year, facilitated via the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), it has proved a frustrating process for many people in the country. Namely as payments have not been received, along with there being very little communication from government over why that is the case.

Earlier this week, SASSA announced that the grants would once again be opened up to South Africans as we continue to live life under lockdown with the spectre of the delta variant of the coronavirus looming.

Unpacking how the process would work, government’s official Twitter account outlined eight key elements for those applying to keep in mind.

It is the eighth point, which grabbed our attention as it explained that you would forfeit any money owed to you, should your details be incorrect after 31st August 2021.

“Any applicant whose application was approved but not paid because the applicant could not be traced or the applicant did not contact SASSA to update his or her personal details, shall forfeit the money to the State after 31 August 2021 and such applicant shall not be able to lodge any claim against the State,” the tweet’s graphic (pasted below) explained.

Given that these grants will be issued over a period of eight months until March 2022, this deadline is crucial for those dependent on the grants at this time. As such, those applying for grants will need to ensure their details are correct to avoid being unduly penalised by SASSA.

In order to apply if you have not already, or check on the status of your application, as well as make any queries before the aforementioned 31st August deadline, citizens have been urged to visit this SASSA portal.

With the issuing of grants proving highly mixed to date, we advise any of our readers needing assistance to visit the portal and ensure they have the correct details on hand and ready to apply. These include:

  • Identity Number or Department of Home Affairs Refugee permit number
  • Name and Surname as captured in the Identity Document
  • Gender and Disability
  • Contact details – Cell phone number
  • Residential Address.

Along with the above portal you can also contact SASSA over the re-introduced grants on WhatsApp via 082 046 8553 and USSD with *134*7737#.
