You can now block all cookies on GOG (except the 68 necessary ones)

Today CD Projekt’s storefront GOG sent out an email to its users to inform them of an updated Cookie Policy and Privacy Policy – pretty standard stuff really – but under the “why?” section things got a bit funny.

“As we want you to have an option to manage your privacy settings in a more precise way, we’ve implemented a new cookie management tool on GOG. Now, you may block or enable every cookie (except necessary cookies) by using the Cookie Declaration tool,” the email reads.

Curiosity piqued we had to wonder – just how many “necessary” cookies are on GOG’s site?

When visiting the store a box will pop up on the bottom right corner to inform you of the cookies. Clicking on the “settings” part of the box will break down how many cookies there are and how many are necessary.

Hilariously there are 115 cookies with 68 of them being necessary.

We get it, cookies are necessary in some instances, but sending out an email boasting about turning them off, only for the majority of them be permanent, is a weird move.

For those wondering an explanation is provided by GOG when you try to deselect the necessary cookies:

“Mandatory – can not be deselected. Necessary cookies help make a website usable by enabling basic functions like page navigation and access to secure areas of the website. The website cannot function properly without these cookies,” a popup on the site reads.

Those now worried about how the store operates really shouldn’t be because, functionally, everything remains the same. The aforementioned alert email points this out, so really there’s nothing to do for those who would like to continue using GOG.

“In order to reflect the addition of Cookie Declaration in our legal documents, we’ve made small changes to our Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy. They are purely technical and don’t change the way we process your data,” the email continues.
