A closer look at the Logitech G Series

When most companies have a line of products dedicated to gaming they usually feature harsh angles, boisterous design and copious amounts of the colour red, but thankfully there are other companies like Logitech which do things right.

The G Series brings Logitech’s long history of professional workmanship to the world of gaming creating an entire line-up of peripherals for PC and console that not only excel in the intended world of games, but are equally at home in the classroom or the office.

Exemplifying this is several impressive pieces of technology, such as Lightsync RGB which brings context-specific lighting to games so that real world peripherals react to what’s happening on screen. There’s also artificial intelligence at work in the headphones to deliver the best audio experience, and the Hero 25K sensor in the mice which offer the industry gold standard when it comes to tracking.

This and more is waiting for you in the G Series, but let’s look at some examples.

Our personal picks

All of these G Series products are products we’ve used before and have grown a particular fondness for and thus come with a high recommendation.

You may have already heard about the Logitech G502 Hero in conversations which usually end with “don’t worry about looking at other mice, just get the G502”.

Yes in the time it’s been available the G502 Hero has amassed a cult following, and for good reason. The aforementioned Hero sensor offers DPI as low as 100, and as high as 25 600. No matter how big your mouse mat is or crazy you like the sensitivity, the G502 Hero has you covered.

The sensor is hidden away inside of a comfortable body that contours to your hand and can be modified with an included five different weights for the proper balance. Combine that with 11 programmable buttons and a super smooth glide, and it’s clear why so many people recommend it.

A mouse is only one half of any good PC setup, of course, and the Logitech G513 is the perfect keyboard companion. This is a full length keyboard so you get the full array of function keys, arrow cluster and numpad. While smaller keyboards are popular in the gaming scene the G513 is the board that can do both because you really miss those keys when you need to get some work done.

And, of course, you want as many of those fantastic keys are possible because there’s two choices of mechanical switches here. The GX Brown keys offer a tactile, smooth experience with mechanical feedback on every key stroke while still remaining understated. GX Blues, on the other hand, are clicky with a satisfying, audible click on every hit. Both GX Brown and GX Blue are favourites in the worlds of gaming and typing, so it comes down to personal preference.

Our last favourite pick to show off what the G Series is capable of is the Logitech F710, an absolute veteran in the world of game controllers. Like the G502 Hero, the F710 has a reputation that proceeds it as the go-to choice for those looking to use a controller on PC.

As a true wireless gamepad the F710 comes with its own USB receiver that even stows away inside of the body of the controller when not in use. There’s no proprietary batteries here instead working off of regular AA batteries so you can use those high capacity rechargeable versions that are so popular now.

The layout here is the traditional double joystick / XYAB button setup so there’s no guesswork as to which fingers go where.

And here’s the best kept secret in gaming over the last few years: the F710’s value for money is off the charts. Ever looked at the price of a new game controller only to be dismayed as every year they creep closer to R2K? For the same price you can buy multiple – yes multiple – F710s.
