#ADayOffTwitch protest had a noticeable effect on Twitch viewership and streamers

Twitch has a hate raid problem. Generally, raids are used to push viewers to a friend of a streamer when they go offline but in recent months raids have been used to target hate at marginalised groups.

On Wednesday this week several streamers stayed offline in a bid to shine a light on the issue of hate raids while also making a statement to Twitch about the perceived inaction from the platform.

However, the protest was met with reluctance and a general air of “who cares”. Indeed, while many streamers did take a day off, many smaller streamers who can’t afford to take even a single day off didn’t.

So how effective was the protest? That depends on how you define effective.

According to Creator Hype, on Wednesday – the day of the protest – only 119 000 streamers were live compared to an average of 136 000 streamers over the previous Wednesdays.

While DrLupo and TimTheTatman’s exodus from Twitch may have affected the numbers, Creator Hype says the viewership the streamers drew in was negligible.

“Combined, they account for a peak viewership of 62,539. If we include their peak viewership into the previous data, #ADayOffTwitch was responsible for ~338 000 fewer viewers on the platform. That’s roughly an 8.4 percent decrease in viewership,” the publication wrote.

Taking into consideration factors such as schools reopening, and the exodus of big name streamers, the impact of viewership and streamers saw a dip as low as 5 percent but could also be potentially as high as 15 percent.

With that having been said, the goal of #ADayOffTwitch was to raise awareness around the issue and that appears to have been accomplished.

As for what Twitch is doing, the platform has said that it is working on a solution for hate raids but the opinion from streamers is that it isn’t working fast enough or doing the bare minimum at the very least.
