Apple patches zero day vulnerability and urges users to update all devices

This evening Apple will host an event, where the iPhone 13 lineup, new Watch and AirPods are expected. While that means there is some new devices to look forward to, those currently with Apple products should take heed of a zero day vulnerability that was recently patched.

The vulnerability was discovered in late-August by researchers at Citizen Lab, bringing it to Apple’s attention, after which it has been successfully patched. Now the company is urging users with an iPhone, iPad, Watch Or Mac device to update as soon as possible.

Said patch will be found in iOS 14.8 and iPadOS 14.8 updates for mobile devices, as well as the latest releases for wearables, notebooks and All-In-Ones.

Unpacking the precise nature of the zero day vulnerability, Citizen Lab says an exploit pushed in Israeli firm NSO Group’s Pegasus Spyware, is the cause. It is, however, important to note, that NSO is yet to comment on the exploit.

“After identifying the vulnerability used by this exploit for iMessage, Apple rapidly developed and deployed a fix in iOS 14.8 to protect our users. We’d like to commend Citizen Lab for successfully completing the very difficult work of obtaining a sample of this exploit so we could develop this fix quickly,” noted Apple’s head of security engineering and architecture, Ivan Krstić, in a statement to TechCrunch.

“Attacks like the ones described are highly sophisticated, cost millions of dollars to develop, often have a short shelf life, and are used to target specific individuals. While that means they are not a threat to the overwhelming majority of our users, we continue to work tirelessly to defend all our customers, and we are constantly adding new protections for their devices and data,” he added.

With iOS 15 and other upcoming Apple operating systems set to be release dates at tonight’s event, it is worthwhile for those users concerned with security to update their devices as soon as possible.
