Apple unveils new iPad and iPad Mini coming “next week”

Apple kicked off its event this evening with news of two new iPads.

The first is the 9th Generation of the iPad itself which now sports an A13 Bionic chip. This means that there is a 20 percent bump in performance for the CPU, CPU and the Neural Engine.

Apple claims, vaguely, that this iPad is three times faster than the best selling Chromebook and six times faster than the best selling Android tablet.

The real news here is that the front facing camera has been bumped up to a 12MP ultrawide snapper. This, Apple says, allows this iPad to make use of Center Stage, an Apple application that follows subjects in video conferencing applications and video.

“As users move around, Center Stage automatically pans the camera to keep them in view. When others join in, the camera detects them too, and smoothly zooms out to include them in the conversation. Center Stage makes video calls more natural in FaceTime as well as third-party video-calling apps,” Apple explains.

Other than True Tone however, not much has changed here including the Lightning charging port. The display measures 10.2inches.

The new iPad will ship with iPad iOS 15 and prices start at $329 for the 64GB iteration with WiFi. There is a special offer for those purchasing the iPad for educational purposes and that offer is $299.

The new iPad arrives in the US on 24th September.

iPad Mini

The new iPad mini is getting a major upgrade. The slate now sports an A15 Bionic chip which sports a 6-core CPU and a 5-core GPU. This leads to a 40 percent CPU and 80 percent GPU performance increase compared to the previous iPad Mini.

Like the new iPad, the iPad Mini features a 12MP Ultrawide front facing camera which supports Center Stage.

The slate now also features 5G connectivity and a USB Type C port.

The rear camera is also a 12MP snapper with a F/1.8 aperture that can also record video at up to 4K resolution.

The iPad Mini arrives in the US on 24th September and prices start at $499 for the WiFi model while WiFi and 5G models start at $649.
