Confusion reigns as Twitter verification reopened again

Twitter verification continues to be a frustrating experience for many as the application process has once again be reopened.

The social media platform initially announced that verified applications would be opened up in November of last year, but then it took several months for the option to be available to the wider Twitter community.

Anyone who tried to apply likely had a mixed experience, as was the case for our own account, which proved quite vexing despite Hypertext being a recognised technology news outlet with a long history on the platform.

When several fake accounts were verified earlier in the year, Twitter decided to pause the program a month ago, and today has reopened it.

Whether those glitches have been addressed remains to be seen.

Given the fact that a quick inspection of our own settings tab in Twitter at the time of writing shows no verification button, it looks like each coming day will require a check.

It is also unclear whether the application this time around will be a fruitful endeavour. Either way, where blue badges (or ticks depending on your preference) served as a way to verify an account’s authority and trustworthiness, it recent years that line has become quite blurred.

Should our verification attempt prove successful, it will be interesting to see what benefits it yields while using Twitter, other than the “status” that comes with it.
