As we pass the midway point of September and look forward to the prospect of a long weekend in the coming days, there is still the spectre of COVID-19 in South Africa to worry about.
To that end, the latest report regarding the spread of the virus does offer some cause for optimism, but as we have seen in recent weeks, statistics usually rise as the week progresses.
For now, the past 24 hours has seen 2 281 new cases for COVID-19 in South Africa recorded by the National Department of Health (NDoH). The department also confirms that the total number of cases recorded to date has risen to 2 882 630.
Other key statistics show 58 fatalities being recorded as the death toll related to the virus increases to 86 174. Added to this, the recovery rate is now 94.8 percent as 2 732 363 recoveries have been recorded, while over 17.35 million tests have been conducted to date.
As for the vaccine rollout, the past 24 hours has seen 17 598 vaccines administered owing to it being a Sunday. In general though, the turnout at sites across the country since all those aged 18 and over were made eligible, have been in excess of 200 000 daily.
As of 17:00 on 19th September, 15 992 374 jabs have been administered in SA, with an estimated 7 911 171 people inoculated at this stage.
