COVID-19 in South Africa: 3rd September 2021

As we approach the weekend, the number of fatalities related to COVID-19 in South Africa appears to be on the rise again. This as the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH) confirms that 418 new fatalities have been recorded over the past 24 hours.

As a result, the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa has risen to 82 914, with the impact of the third wave of infections under the delta variant of the virus still being felt.

Looking at the other figures in the report, the NDoH confirms that 9 203 new cases have been recorded in the past 24 hours as the total number of infections for the country to date has climbed to 2 796 405. The recovery rate has since dropped slightly to 91.8 percent with 2 568 465 recoveries being reported. The department also notes that over 16.59 million tests have been conducted at this stage.

Shifting to the vaccine rollout, efforts in this area look more promising as 250 843 vaccines have been administered in the past 24 hours. As of 17:00 on 2nd September, 13 112 268 vaccines have been administered in total, with an estimated 6 301 758 people inoculated so far.

With little known about the newest variant of the virus discovered in SA this week and predictions of a fourth wave in December, the vaccine rollout will prove crucial.
