COVID-19 in South Africa: 6th September 2021

As we exit yet another weekend under lockdown, the numbers relating to COVID-19 in South Africa show a decrease in some of the key daily statistics – namely infections and fatalities.

To that end the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH) confirms that 5 931 cases have been reported in the past 24 hours, which is far lower than we saw last week ramping up to the weekend.

This may simply be a case of slower reporting on these days, so it remains to be seen if we are indeed turning the corner on the impact of the third wave of infections.

For now, the total number of infections recorded to date has climbed to 2 819 945.

As for fatalities, 76 have been reported, which too, is far less than we have seen in recent weeks when exiting a weekend. That said, the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa has increased to 83 419.

Looking at the other key figures, the recovery rate has risen slightly to 92 percent from last week Friday, while the NDoH says over 16.74 million tests have been conducted to date.

As for the vaccine rollout, the past 24 hours has seen 18 483 vaccines administered owing to it being a Sunday. As of 17:00 on 5th September, a total of 13 454 823 jabs have been administered in the country, with an estimated 6 492 469 people inoculated.
