As the country awaits word on a reported move to a lower level of lockdown and easing of restrictions, the latest report regarding COVID-19 in South Africa from the National Department of Health (NDoH) shows that statistics on the virus are not dropping significantly.
This as the past 24 hours has seen 7 338 new cases recorded, along with 253 fatalities. While this is far less than we saw during the peak of the third wave as a result of the delta variant, we are still far from bringing the spread of the virus under control.
Consequently, the total number of infections recorded to date has climbed to 2 836 773 while the death toll has reached 84 152.
Looking at some of the other figures in the latest report, over 16.87 million tests have been conducted to date as the recovery rate remains at 92.3 percent with 2 618 386 recoveries reported by the NDoH.
As for the vaccine rollout, the daily turnout is on the up again with 217 613 vaccines administered in the past 24 hours. As of 17:00 on 8th September, a total of 14 126 008 vaccines have been administered to date, with an estimated 6 888 163 people inoculated at this stage.
