First look at God of War Ragnarok showcases more Asgardian realms

Last night’s PlayStation Showcase could have all been for nought had we not gotten a glimpse of God of War Ragnarok. Thankfully we did and now we have plenty to dissect and fawn over as the game’s 2022 release date draws closer.

Sadly Santa Monica Studio did not share a precise date, which leaves room for any last minute spit and polish, but what we saw last night was very promising indeed.

As the name would suggest, Kratos and Atreus are trying to prevent Ragnarok, which has already been set in motion thanks to their actions in the first game. Added to this is the threat of dealing with Thor and Odin, along with Freya, whose son you killed in the first game too.

The trailer also served up our first look at Tyr, the Norse god of war, who was referenced several times in stories throughout 2018’s title.

Another aspect we glimpsed in the game are the three remaining Asgardian realms, which were initially sealed off from Kratos and Atreus in the first God of War. These areas look to be a bit more populated, so hopefully there are chances for more engaging interactions than simply killing enemies out for your head.

The combat looks to be as sharp as ever too in God of War Ragnarok, but a hands-on closer to the time of release will confirm our theories.

“It would not be God of War without a healthy serving of visceral and spectacular combat. You’ve been able to see just a hint of new attack abilities, a new Runic Summon for Atreus, and of course, the return of Kratos’ legendary weapons,” notes Grace Orlady, senior community manager at Santa Monica Studio, in a PlayStation blog post.

“Whatever your choice of combat strategy, the enemies that await in God of War Ragnarök will be ready. The realms have grown harsher, and a whole host of new creatures from across Norse mythology will test your skills. From the trailer you can see what happens when Kratos finds himself under the hooves of the Stalker or grabbed between the jaws of a Dreki, and that’s just the beginning,” she adds.
