HBO Max expanding to European countries next month, but no word on our neck of the woods

Much like Disney+ before it, HBO Max is looking to expand to new territories. The streaming platform, which has been available in North America for the most part, is now aiming to expand into Europe starting next month.

According to The Hollywood Reporter (THR), HBO Max will be available in six European countries from 26th October – Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Spain and Andorra.

Next year, this will be followed by a further 14 countries in the EU region, although a precise date has not been mentioned at this time – Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia and Slovenia.

As for South Africa, little is known at this stage, despite Priya Dogra, president of WarnerMedia for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), unpacking the expansion for THR.

“Europe is a huge priority for us. It’s a complicated market, but an exciting one,” she explained.

Hopefully complexity is the reason why SA has been left in the dark by HBO Max for now, especially with much of the TimeWarner content being licensed out locally to other services, including Showmax.

While HBO Max is not available here in an official capacity, content made for the platform has found its way to our shores in recent months, such as the Snyder Cut and Friends Reunion.

With appetites for digital content only increasing as the pandemic and lockdown continues, hopefully we won’t have to wait until Winter 2022.
