Lenovo will be first to market with VMware’s software solution for the edge

This week Lenovo will hold its annual Tech World conference, focusing on the company’s objectives in the ICT and enterprise space.

One said objective will be in delivering edge computing and a recent announcement will see Lenovo be the first to market with VMware’s solutions designed for this environment.

“The new solution will be delivered directly to customer edge sites with the VMware software solution pre-loaded on a pair of ruggedised and security enhanced ThinkSystem SE350,” explained a press release sent to Hypertext.

“In addition, Lenovo also announced the enhancement of Lenovo Open Cloud Automation management software to automate the planning, deployment and ongoing management of data centre cloud deployments all the way to edge sites. Organisations can now plan their data centre cloud and edge infrastructure solutions using the same management software,” it added.

Lenovo believes edge computing will prove particularly important given the hybrid work environment that has developed in the past year as a result of the pandemic, with the SE350 we first encountered in 2019 proving a key part of bringing this to fruition.

“For better business continuity, improved applications and user experiences, hybrid cloud models are being deployed both in the cloud and at the edge. The new solution announced today supports this hybrid model,” noted Charles Ferland, VP and GM for Edge Computing and Communication Service Providers at Lenovo ISG.

“It can save up to half of the servers normally needed and takes full advantage of the built-in networking features of the ThinkSystem SE350 to further remove any other networking elements at the edge sites,” he continued.

For now, no precise date has been mentioned for the rollout of these servers running VMware’s software, but given that both organisations operate in South Africa, it is safe to assume that will be deployed locally at some stage.

When that is, remains to be seen, but as we predicted two years ago, the ThinkSystem SE350 will prove a vital piece of kit for Lenovo.

With Tech World 2021 kicking off in earnest tomorrow, perhaps more details of the collaboration between Lenovo and VMware will be revealed.
