Marvel Unlimited app updated to allow downloading

Marvel Unlimited, the subscription service which boasts more than 29 000 comics, has had its mobile app overhauled with several improvements including the ability to download comics.

While it may be a less important feature overseas where data is cheaper, the ability to download content when you’re connected to WiFi for enjoyment later is a massive boon in countries like South Africa. Anything that avoids paying for data on the go is appreciated here.

“You asked—we listened. Take your comics on-the-go by downloading endless comics for offline reading. Download limitless issues, and enjoy the journey towards your destination on, and off, Wi-Fi,” reads an announcement of the new app.

The other big news from an app point of view is comics made specifically for the experience on phones and tablets.

Called Infinity Comics, these will be digital exclusives presented in a horizontal format to better suit mobile devices.

“These exclusive Infinity Comics can only be found on Marvel Unlimited, in-universe stories designed for phone and tablet starring the X-MenCaptain AmericaShang-ChiBlack WidowVenomCarnageDeadpool, and more every single month. Read the first issue of X-MEN UNLIMITED INFINITY COMIC #1 now, the latest X-Men series from Jonathan Hickman and Declan Shalvey that kicks off a series of rotating adventures featuring the many mutants of Krakoa and beyond,” the announcement adds.

Released weekly Infinity Comics launches with 27 comics in the app right now and a planned 100 to be out before the end of 2021. With the year in its final quarter already that’s a lot of content in the pipeline.

Other features of the new app include the ability to follow specific heroes to get notified when new comics are released featuring them, recommendations personalised to the user, account syncing across devices and “Insider Points”, an in-app currency awarded for reading comics.

Marvel Unlimited still doesn’t have localised pricing so those wishing to subscribe will need to pay $9.99 per month. There’s also a year subscription for $69 nice and a $99 “Annual Plus” option which comes with a membership kit.

Those who have never subscribed before can also give the seven-day free trial a test drive.

As always when talking about digital comics we urge those who prefer the paper alternative to support your local comic and hobby stores by buying from them, especially as the pandemic has been so difficult on these establishments.
