Microsoft needs better native video editing, so it acquired Clipchamp

Growing up through the 90s and early 2000s you likely encountered Windows Movie Maker. The video editing software was the first taste of movie making for many, but it wasn’t as good as the software available today.

The software lives on as Video Editor, though it’s a far cry from the likes of Adobe Premiere, Da Vinci and other specialised video editing suites.

On Tuesday however, Microsoft announced a rather interesting acquisition that may make creating videos within the Microsoft ecosystem a bit easier.

The acquisition is of Clipchamp which allows users to create video clips within a browser window.

“Clipchamp’s technical approach is to combine the simplicity of a web app with the ability to process video using the full computing power of a PC with graphics processing unit (GPU) acceleration, something that was formerly limited to traditional video applications,” explains corporate vice president of the Office media group at Microsoft, Chris Pratley.

What exactly Microsoft intends to do with Clipchamp following this acquisition is unclear but Pratley did state that “Clipchamp is a natural fit to extend the cloud-powered productivity experiences in Microsoft 365 for individuals, families, schools, and businesses” and Windows.

The vice president did, however, state that Clipchamp will be improved upon and more options and power would be coming to the application.

“We have been committed to empowering anyone to tell stories through video. We will continue to make video creation even easier, more accessible and fun. And we are incredibly excited to be doing this from within Microsoft,” wrote Clipchamp co-founder and chief executive officer Alexander Dreiling.

Could this mean that Windows is getting a more powerful and feature rich video editor? That’s not entirely clear at this stage, but it’s a move that would make sense especially with a new operating system launching next month.

For now though Clipchamp will continue to exist online.
