NBA 2K22 has a disastrous launch weekend on PC

It is no secret that the PC is a neglected platform when it comes to yearly releases of sports titles, with it usually receiving the least support and content, with the latest example proving this to be NBA 2K22.

The basketball title launched this past weekend on all platforms and it seems to be having the worst time, at least in terms of audience reception, on PC.

Looking at the Steam page for the game reveals that, of the 1 656 reviews left so far, only 33 percent of them are positive.

This leaves NBA 2K22 with the “Mostly Negative” review rating. This is one step above the worst possible rating on Steam, “Overwhelmingly Negative”.

You know how, in Steam reviews, swear words and other bad phrases are automatically replaced with a symbol of a heart (♥)? Well oh boy, there’s a lot of that.

If you search for the heart symbol on the page you get 34 results, so people are expressing their thoughts rather openly.

Looking at some of these negative reviews and many topics pop up continually: lack of change from previous instalments, rampant cheating in multiplayer and pervasive microtransactions.

We’ve seen all these complaints before in previous versions of the game, so it’s not too much of a surprise.

Looking at the comparatively small amount of positive reviews is a strange experience. Many are short reviews such as “aight”, “it aint bad” or “gg”. Other positive reviews seem to be backhanded as users left a thumbs up but mention mostly problems in the written section.

Outside of the reviews we can also look at how many people have actually bought and played the game thanks to some revealed statistics.

The official game and player stats tool on Steam reports that the peak player count for the game in the last 24 hours was 20 390, placing the game at 48th place on the entirety of the Steam.

For comparison just above it is Total War: Warhammer II in 47th with 27 895 players, and Farming Simulator 19 in 46th place and 36 865 players.

Actual sales numbers aren’t available to the public but third party reporting site SteamSpy estimates the number of owners on Steam to be anywhere between two and five million.

We currently have a review in progress of NBA 2K22, albeit on the PlayStation 5.
