Second major PS5 software update rolls out tomorrow

Tomorrow PlayStation 5 owners will likely be downloading a new software update that features a number of important improvements to the gaming platform.

This is the second significant update for the system since its release late last year, with Sony also adding some enhancements to the PS app, Remote Play app and PS4 console.

The PS5 ones, however, are of most interest and run the gamut of hardware functionality and more cosmetic user interface elements.

To that end the September update, as it is being dubbed, will allow users to more freely customise the look and layout of the system’s UX. Messaging others in the PS community is also said to be easier, with Sony adding a Leader type to accolades, automatic video capture of personal best attempts, and a trophy tracker widget to the mix.

Other key elements being introduced with the September update include 3D audio support on TV speakers that are compatible.

“Once enabled in the Sound menu, this feature transforms standard two-channel TV speaker audio into three-dimensional sound, heightening the sense of gameplay immersion,” says a PlayStation blog post.

The final crucial change worth noting will be the ability to expand storage via an M.2 SSD for PS5 owners across the globe.

“Once installed in the PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition console, M.2 SSD storage can be used to download, copy, and launch PS5 and PS4 games, as well as media apps. You can play PS5 and PS4 games directly from M.2 SSD storage and freely move games between storage options,” adds the blog.

It’s also important to note that not all M.2 SSDs will work, so browsing through the minimum performance and size requirements is advised. You can also watch an installation video guide for expansion here.

As was the case with the previous significant update, if you leave your PS5 on Rest Mode overnight, you may wake up to the update being downloaded and ready to install. That said, the precise size of the download has not been disclosed.
