See exactly how Marvel’s Midnight Suns works in a Sabretooth fight

Last week Firaxis Games and 2K revealed gameplay of Marvel’s Midnight Suns but it left a lot to be desired with quick cuts that didn’t reveal much. Now we have a proper look at how things will look in a mission against Sabretooth.

Wolverine’s brother and fellow mutant, Sabretooth is the focus of a gameplay walkthrough released recently that shows a mission from start to finish with commentary from the creative director and franchise producer working on the game.

This video, which you can watch in the embed below, is said to be an alpha version of the game running on PC.

Before the gameplay even starts the two developers point out some worries people had about the card system revealed last week. The pair confirm that no microtransactions will be in the game that can directly affect gameplay, so that’s nice.

The final little niggle here is the really poor audio quality of the walkthrough. Hopefully this is something that is fixed before another video is released.

We’re patting ourselves on the shoulder here as the main base of operations visited between missions – called The Abbey – is stated to be directly inspired by the Avengers Mansion. We mentioned the two having similarities last week.

Once you leave The Abbey and start a mission you can fight enemies with abilities each assigned as a card and dealt to the player as a hand. These abilities, when used, build up a resource called Heroism which allows for the use of the most powerful attacks in the game.

After beating some Hydra fodder, Sabretooth arrives and we get to see how the game handles bosses.

Aside from more health and damage Sabretooth has unique moves and abilities not seen on any other enemies in the game. The developers state that each boss will have its own unique ability which sets them apart.

Also important in the gameplay is the use of the environment. Taking cover was usually priority number one in the newer Xcom titles to keep your soldiers healthy, but here environmental objects are used offensively instead. This lines up with the game having a faster pace in comparison.

Overall we really like what we see here. Those worried that Midnight Suns has strayed too far away from the Xcom formula that Firaxis is known for can rest easy because a lot of the same DNA is here.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns is scheduled for release in March 2022.
